Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) October 18, 2007 -- DCA Fine Art is pleased to announce Biedul & Gehry: Raw Space. A two-man exhibition featuring the work of Los Angeles based artists Brian Biedul and Alejandro Gehry, son of seminal architect Frank Gehry. Raw Space will debut November 3, 2007 and continue through December 31, 2007. The opening night reception is on November 3rd 6-9pm.
Raw Space curated by Delia Cabral, examines two diverse subject matters; gestalt conceptual space and human sexuality, separate ideas united through the use of the human form. "This show has many layers of interesting content, but the idea of misconception was also very interesting to me," said Cabral. The misconception Cabral refers to is that the name "Gehry," is a name synonymous with architecture; however, in Raw Space it is Biedul's work that investigates gestalt space through the application of theoretical architecture. Alejandro Gehry's work on the other hand, is concerned with human sexuality, pushing boundaries and confronting societal taboos.
Brian Biedul's work explores gestalt space created in the mind of the viewer with a special interest in the boundary between the concept of "inside" and "outside." In Biedul's latest series he is breaking from the ephemeral medium of installation and working with traditional oil on canvas and bronze sculpture, using the human form to articulate the space and define the boundaries of the art. In Biedul's "Spaces" the figure is a secondary object, the art is first and foremost the space that is defined. "In order for me to define the limitations of the space, I have placed a figure in that space and that is the only reason for it. I could have used anything, but I chose the human body because it is universally understood. There are no disagreements as to where the body starts and stops," said Biedul.
Alejandro Gehry is also interested in boundaries, albeit those that reside in culture. Gehry's imagery brings consciousness to variations in humans sexuality with explicit subject matter painted in a graphic, linear style on large expressive color fields. As a provocateur, Gehry's paintings challenge societies sexual norms by addressing gender beliefs, sexual relationships, attitudes and behavior. My work at times is described as somewhat 'erotic' and this is due to the fact that human sexuality is a subject matter that has always interested me. I push these boundaries because sex and sexuality is seen as taboo by so many people in the United States," said Alejandro Gehry.
Together the work of Biedul & Gehry provides a threshold for viewers to step inside and experience art that pushes our own understanding of how the human form can be used to challenge our ideas of spacial or sexual boundaries. "Los Angeles is changing the art landscape and this show is emblematic of that rebirth. Figurative work has once again resurfaced and although Biedul & Gehry don't classify themselves as figurative painters, they have taken the human form and placed it within a new context. Rich in conceptualism, the look of Biedul's work is an interesting fusion of neo-classical representational painting of the figure set against the minimal void or emptiness of space. Gehry's expressive pop-influenced linear paintings surprise the viewer with the totality of the image challenging our sexual taboos. Together, the work in this exhibition represents what's next and exiting about art that's coming out of the west coast," added Cabral.
Biedul & Gehry: Raw Space opens at DCA Fine Art in Santa Monica, CA on November 3, 2007 and continues through December 31, 2007. The gallery exhibition hours are Tuesday through Sunday 11am - 5pm or by appointment.
Brian Biedul received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in 1984 and presently resides and works in Santa Monica, California. Biedul's work has been featured in a number of domestic and international publications including dwell, which cited his work as "?something we should all be able to relate to." Biedul's work will be included in an upcoming book from Rizzoli Publications, which examines the male nude in contemporary art by David Leddick.
Alejandro Gehry graduated in 1998 with a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and presently resides and works in Venice, California. Metropolis Magazine profiled Gehry for his work on two large-scale murals for the Issey Miyake's flagship store in New York. Since that time, he has been included in a number of exhibitions. Gehry teaches illustration and figurative painting at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and the Brentwood Art Center.
